The principle of operation of flowmeters of the PhD type is based on measuring the frequency of formation of vortices that occur in the flow of liquid or gas when flowing around a stationary body. When a flow body of a special shape is introduced into the pipeline perpendicular to the flow (usually in the form of a trapezoidal prism facing the flow with a wide side), vortices are alternately torn off from each of its surfaces, creating a so-called "Van Karman track". The frequency of vortex formation, under certain conditions, is directly proportional to the volumetric flow rate of the medium. The vortex paths are located behind the flow body in a "staggered" order, creating pressure pulsations with the frequency of vortex disruption (in the center of the vortex there is - as in an atmospheric cyclone - reduced pressure), which can be transformed by appropriate sensitive sensors.
